Amid stalled US-Russia peace talks over Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a UN-led “transitional administration” for Ukraine, aiming for a ceasefire and democratic elections. Speaking in Murmansk on Friday, Putin suggested the UN could oversee temporary governance while Ukraine holds elections, which would then lead to peace talks with the new government.
The idea, which Putin says could be discussed with the US and European countries, was quickly rejected by the White House, which reaffirmed Ukraine’s government was determined by its constitution. Ukraine’s government is expected to reject the proposal, as President Zelensky has consistently upheld Ukraine’s sovereignty and refused calls for a new election or retreat.
Putin also praised US President Trump, saying he believed Trump genuinely wanted to end the conflict. Meanwhile, despite a partial ceasefire aimed at protecting energy infrastructure, fighting continues with missile strikes and drone attacks across both sides of the border.
