Israel Strikes Beirut, Breaks Ceasefire with Hezbollah

Israel launched airstrikes on Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, marking the first attack since a ceasefire with Hezbollah began in November. The strikes followed a warning from Israel’s military, urging residents in Hadath, a southern suburb, to evacuate. Reports describe intense bombing, signaling the ceasefire’s collapse.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes as a breach of the U.S.- and France-backed agreement, urging global action to enforce it. Schools and universities in Hadath shut down, and residents fled in panic after Israel’s Arabic-language spokesperson posted on X, warning those near Hezbollah-linked sites to leave immediately for safety.

Israel justified the attack, claiming Hezbollah resumed strikes into northern Israel. Southern Lebanon also faced deadly raids, with one person killed and eight injured, including three children, in Kfar Tebnit, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Israel reported intercepting a rocket from Lebanon, which Hezbollah denied launching.

Analysts suggest Hezbollah’s weakened state has emboldened Israel. Expert Elijah Magnier predicts further escalation, possibly a limited war, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to bolster his domestic position amid ongoing tensions.
